Insight #24: The direction paradox

What we get wrong when trying to find direction and meaning in life

Hello again and welcome to Insight #24: The direction paradox.

  • Very often in life we find ourselves lost, lacking meaning, not knowing what we like, or even what is best for us. People tell us various ways to find this supposed “path” that we ought to find somewhere.

  • The thing is, direction only exists when an object is in motion. So thinking that you can acquire some direction by thinking your way through is a common mistake. Instead we need to think it as we would a literal object in motion.

  • So, how do we get a sense of direction then? Well quite simply, start moving. It doesn't matter where, or what you are doing, or if you think that way is the right one or not. In the end the only way to truly know what something entails is doing it. A saying in Spanish goes something like this: “The path is made while we walk it”.

  • Another point is that you will never know beforehand what life has in store for you. Opportunity is that which lies beyond your scope, almost by definition. If you can see it, it has become a choice, wether you shoot for it or not, but when you still don't know, it is opportunity, chance in it's most pure form. And it is in this chance that we find life, our passions, and our futures.

  • He who stands still can understand their environment (which is also important), and he who moves can understand himself (or herself, we all apply here).

  • As a final insight I would like to note that stating the movement towards something, isn't quite enough. You need to allow a certain amount of time and follow through to really get a complete picture of the arrow you are drawing. Imagine the concept of momentum as the size of the arrow you are moving towards. The more you move the faster you go and the bigger the arrow gets. That is when things click and doubts burn away.

So, when was the list time you ventured into an unknown direction? What is something that has been on the corner of your attention but you haven't had the clarity to pursue? Go and get it!

Until next time, again, I apologize for the lackluster insights. I wish you can appreciate the hopefully increasing quality over quantity on each one I do put out. As a closing note, have you seen the earliest insights? #1 to #10 where uploaded before this project went public, so if you want to read them click on the Read online link at the top of the email! ;)
