Insight #21: On peace

Real peace doesn't come from peaceful circumstances...

Hello again and welcome to Insight #21; On peace.

  • Historically peace has been thought of as a lack of war or conflict. The sort of natural state of human existence, barring adversity and difficulty. As for internal or individual peace, much of the same qualities apply, or at least, that's what people usually think.

  • Today however I want to bring another perspective, one which I experienced recently.

  • So I want to recontextualize peace, from something that happens out there, or a state of the world, to an internal one, a state of mind. True peace is the complete acceptance of the circumstances which befall us, good or bad.

  • It is also the abandonment of ambition and change. Though these might seem positive in some respects, they are pretty opposing to peace. Note however that ambition or pursuit to be the issue, not necessarily change itself.

  • Peace also can have some stranger qualities. Peace is also found after highly emotional moments, the end of a trip, relationship, or job, a changing of residence, some sort of regression to a previous state of normalcy.

  • It can also be somewhat melancholic, nostalgic, found when remembering cherished memories, and identifying the peace in them, which we often take for granted.

  • It also comes with an understanding of those circumstances we are accepting, it isn't blind, instead it is profoundly wise in it's acceptance of the known and it's recognition of the unknown.

So, think back to a moment which you remember fondly. Was there peace? Stick with that feeling in your mind, and classify it as such. That's how we can learn to better recognize and even call up the emotion when needed.

Until next time, see ya.
